Why Should you Consider Investing In Swimming Pool Covers ...

Investing in a backyard swimming pool is one of the most exotic and pleasurable decision that a homeowner makes in his life. Having a lazy weekend while spending quality time with family and friends is one of the most desired time of every man on this earth. However, on the downside maintenance and upkeep of a swimming pool is one of the most tedious task as well. You must have seen your neighbour having a pool, spending a lot of time cleaning his swimming pool on almost on regular basis. On the other hand, there is nothing more horrifying than to see your pool covered with debris, dirt, leaves, etc. after you come back home from a long weekend trip.

Swimming pool covers were introduced to prevent pool owners from such frightening scenarios. In order to get the most pleasure out of your investment, it is important that you make use of swimming pool covers from xlpools. Swimming pool covers will not only reduce your time and efforts to maintain the pool on regular basis, but also increase the joy of having it. Here are some reasons and advantages of using pool covers.

Top Reasons To Use Swimming Pool Covers

Reduces The Exposure to Sunlight : Air, water and sunlight when combined together aggravates algal growth. Therefore, it is important to cover the pool when not in used to prevent fungal growth and damages caused by algae. Algae growth can make the floor slippery that increases the risk of injuries and accidents.

Heats the Water and Keep it Warm: If you are fond of taking a dip into the pool during nights, pre-winter and post-winter time, but have to resist your temptation due to low water temperature, then this is the ultimate solution. A pool cover can give you the ability to swim during cold season and at nights. The pool cover used for keeping the water warm are known as solar blanket. You can enjoy the pleasure of swimming in the warm water with the use of solar heating pool cover.

It Helps Keeping Chemical Balance in Your Water: Covering your pool with cover is also beneficial in maintaining the balance of chemicals in your pool. When the pool is exposed to sunlight and air the water starts to evaporate, leaving behind the chemicals. This results in high concentration of chemicals, that can be harmful for the swimmers, especially children. Hence, you must cover the pool with suitable sized pool covers to maintain the level of water.

Maintains Safety and Prevents Potential Drowning

With quality swimming pool covers from xlpools, the risk of potential drowning of children or pets at home comes down to zero. You must use good quality pool covers to ensure that your children do not have to struggle to get out of the giant water bed in your absence. Moreover, a covered pool will always look clean and fresh when you have guests visiting your home during winters.

Moderate drinking decreases number of new brain cells

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Drinking a couple of glasses of wine each day has generally been considered a good way to promote cardiovascular and brain health. But a new Rutgers University study indicates that there is a fine line between moderate and binge drinking ? a risky behavior that can decrease the making of adult brain cells by as much as 40 percent.

In a study posted online in the journal Neuroscience, scheduled to be published on November 8, lead author Megan Anderson, a graduate student working with Dr. Tracey J. Shors, Professor II in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Rutgers, reported that moderate to binge drinking ? drinking less during the week and more on the weekends ? significantly reduces the structural integrity of the adult brain.

"Moderate drinking can become binge drinking without the person realizing it," said Anderson. "In the short term there may not be any noticeable motor skills or overall functioning problems, but in the long term this type of behavior could have an adverse effect on learning and memory."

Shors and Anderson worked with postdoctoral fellow Miriam Nokia from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland to model moderate to heavy drinking in humans ? the rodents voluntarily reaching a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent, the legal driving limit in the United States and many other countries ? brain cell production was affected negatively.

The researchers discovered that at this level of intoxication in rats ? comparable to about 3-4 drinks for women and five drinks for men ? the number of nerve cells in the hippocampus of the brain were reduced by nearly 40 percent compared to those in the abstinent group of rodents. The hippocampus is a part of the brain where the new neurons are made and is also known to be necessary for some types of new learning.

This level of alcohol intake was not enough to impair the motor skills of either male or female rats or prevent them from associative learning in the short-term. Still, Anderson said, this substantial decrease in brain cell numbers over time could have profound effects on the structural plasticity of the adult brain because these new cells communicate with other neurons to regulate brain health.

"If this area of your brain was affected every day over many months and years, eventually you might not be able to learn how to get somewhere new or to learn something new about your life," said Anderson, a graduate fellow in the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at Rutgers. "It's something that you might not even be aware is occurring."

According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, men who drink 14 drinks a week and women who drink seven are considered at-risk drinkers. Although college students commonly binge drink, according to the institute, 70 percent of binge drinking episodes involved adults age 26 and older.

"This research indicates that social or daily drinking may be more harmful to brain health than what is now believed by the general public," she said.

The One Thing that Kills Most Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Within Six ...

The internet is a great thing.

It?s made it possible for myself and millions of others to create businesses that can be run from pretty much anywhere.

However, that?s also part of the problem.

It?s gotten too easy.

In less than an hour you can have a new domain, WordPress installed, and be ready to rock.

Why is this a problem? Because for a business to be successful usually there needs to be a modicum of planning that goes into it. ?When you can start half a dozen new businesses in a weekend, you?re simply setting yourself up for failure.

There will never be a shortage of great ideas, however we all have a shortage of time. ?If you?re going to be successful working for yourself, being selective about what projects you take on and when, is going to be absolutely key.

The Biggest Road Block to Success

Over the last year I?ve talked to and worked with hundreds of people who are getting started with their own businesses online, and more often than not, their plan is flawed.

?I want to open an e-commerce store for designer shoes, do freelance graphic design, build people WordPress websites, and start a massively successful blog.?

I hear stuff like this all the time.

What happens when you decide to do all of those things at once?

Absolutely nothing ? and there in lies the problem.

Despite all of your good intentions, you?re never able to gain enough traction on any one project to replace your income. ?So you never end up leaving your job, and are even more unhappy than when you began because you feel like you?ve let yourself down.

Times Are a Changin?

There was a time 5-10 years ago where you could start up 10, 50 or even 100 affiliate sites at once and see success. ?Throw a bunch of spam links at your new domains that have nothing but spam copy, put up some adsense, and voila, instant millionaire!

These days, I can?t think of a worse idea.

SEO is getting much harder.

Whereas you used to be able to link build very effectively for very cheap with spun content and link wheels, that?s becoming a less viable option. Last week SEO may have been dealt it?s biggest blow yet with it?s new ?Disavow Links? tool. ?For people who have been hit with a Google penalty, this could potentially be a great thing, ?but for SEO professionals it means a complete re-think in your strategy.

Simply put, it?s next to impossible to do a good job with SEO on that many sites ? especially if they don?t have rock solid content.

Good Content Will Win in the End

Most of the time when people start a barrage of projects all at once, one of two things happen:

  • Each site never gets updated, dies a quick death, and is relegated to some dark corner of the internet never to be seen again
  • They?re updated with really crappy spam content, and eventually die and are relegated to the same dark corner of the internet

Yes there have been people who have made a bunch of money with adsense sites and other low quality niche sites. ?However in the end, it?s the sites that provide excellent, high quality information on the selected niche that will win.

If you?re considering starting a new project and don?t have every intention of investing the time and/or money to load it up with solid content, you might want to rethink your business strategy.

Over the coming months and years, that?s what will win.

Over a year ago I discussed the importance social influence will have on the search engine results. ?This is proving more true than ever as Facebook, G+, Twitter, Klout etc. all start to have more relevance in search rankings.

The Economics of Too Many Projects

It?s easy to get caught up in a good idea. ?You buy the domain immediately, and get to work.

Wait 48 hours.

I learned about the 48 hour rule from Dan and Ian, and it?s so money.

If in 48 hours you still think you have an excellent idea, then start planning and see where it goes.

Think about it, if you?re going to create 100 niche sites that?s over $1k/annually in domain registration alone. ?Not to mention creating content, hosting the sites, keeping everything up to date and fresh ? that get?s really expensive, really quickly.

Especially when the majority of your sites are probably never going to be profitable.

Now imagine if you had one site that you put the same amount of time and money into. ?In my experience, most people are better off creating one site than dozens. ?It?s easier to provide value and in turn become profitable than it is with tons of small sites or projects that die before even getting off the ground.

So, How Do You Decide What Project to Take On?

I went off a little bit on affiliate sites, but this applies on a much more fundamental level as well.

When you?re first getting your start online, I?m a firm believer that you should pick one project or business model and ride that out until you?re absolutely confident in your ability to take on something new.

I started out building my skills and writing this blog. ?It was over a year before I started my next (personal) site, Daily HDR. ?It was a great idea in theory, but now it hasn?t been updated in months.

Realistically I didn?t take on a personal project that was successful until almost 18 months after beginning the first one.

Why?

Because everything I did on the first business (the blog), was laying the foundation for the next one, Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty.

I was building skills, establishing expertise, and garnering a small following to put myself in a good spot to be successful.

Then slowly but surely, I began adding other projects to my core business.

Everyday I have a new idea for a fun project, and sometimes I?ll even buy a domain. ?However, I don?t go full speed ahead until I know the following:

  • That there?s a need for what I?m providing
  • That there?s the potential to profit
  • That I have both the interest and the time to invest in the new project

So, how should you go about finding new projects? ?Here?s what I do:

Step #1: Assess Your Current Situation

What?s your current goal? ?Do you just want a little side business built around a hobby? Do you want something that will allow you to travel the world? ?Do you want to become the next millionaire entrepreneur?

Each of these goals has a different startup path.

Assess where you are, and then make sure you have the skills necessary to get started.

Step #2: Pick the ONE Project that Will Get You Closest to Your Goal Fastest

Are you trying to build a business as quickly as possible so you can quit your job and travel? ?Then stop trying to create a bunch of bullshit affiliate sites and start freelancing.

Pick one specialty, become a relative expert, and then get clients.

I?ve said it before, and I?ll say it again: Freelancing is the best way to build your first business online.

Step #3: Stabilize the Business

Do you know how much money you?re going to bring in every month? ?Do you have clearly defined processes for managing clients and finding new ones? ?Is work coming to by word of mouth? Are you beginning to become well known in your niche?

Great, keep that going.

Before taking on any new,?significant?projects you want to make sure you have a solid base and are able to manage your current situation.

Step #4: Reassess Your Priorities and Select the Next Project

The chances are, whatever you choose to freelance in isn?t going to be something your totally passionate about. ?It?s going to be a means to being able to live out the things you are passionate about.

Once you?re freelance business is stable, then you can start thinking about other projects you want to take on that are more directly in line with what you like to do.

Two years after I began Location 180, we started up HDR Software. ?Once that was stable, Location Rebel was born. ?Then it wasn?t until a year later that Hacking the High Life was released.

Each of those are businesses built around fundamental interests of mine, but none of them started until the previous one was completely stable.

Step #5: Repeat

This is the thought process I go through everytime I?m going to begin something that I know will be a significant investment of my time and money:

  • Assess where I?m at
  • Decide which project will get me to my desired goal the fastest
  • Begin and stabilize the business
  • Reassess priorities, and find the next opportunity.

Am I saying that you should absolutely, no matter what just take on one project or business? No, I?d be a complete hypocrite if that?s what I was suggesting. ?I love having multiple projects; it?s what keeps everything fresh and interesting for me.

However I am saying you should do your best not to overextend yourself. ?Once you have a base, each future project gets easier and easier to take on, because of the work you?ve put in previously.

Put in the work up front to build your core, and then expand into the fun stuff down the road.

For the first time, researchers have been able to show by acoustic analysis that whalesor at least one very special white whalecan imitate the voices of humans. That's a surprise, because whales typically produce sounds in a manner that is wholly different from humans, say researchers who report their findings in the October 23 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication.

"Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds," said Sam Ridgway of the National Marine Mammal Foundation. "Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact."

It all started in 1984 when Ridgway and others began to notice some unusual sounds in the vicinity of the whale and dolphin enclosure. As they describe it, it sounded as though two people were conversing in the distance, just out of range of their understanding.

Those unusually familiar sounds were traced back to one white whale in particular only some time later when a diver surfaced from the whale enclosure to ask his colleagues an odd question: "Who told me to get out?"

They deduced that those utterances came from a most surprising source: a white whale by the name of NOC. That whale had lived among dolphins and other white whales and had often been in the presence of humans.

In fact, there had been other anecdotal reports of whales sounding like humans before, but in this case Ridgway's team wanted to capture some real evidence. They recorded the whale's sounds to reveal a rhythm similar to human speech and fundamental frequencies several octaves lower than typical whale sounds, much closer to that of the human voice.

"Whale voice prints were similar to human voice and unlike the whale's usual sounds," Ridgway said. "The sounds we heard were clearly an example of vocal learning by the white whale."

That's all the more remarkable because whales make sounds via their nasal tract, not in the larynx as humans do. To make those human-like sounds, NOC had to vary the pressure in his nasal tract while making other muscular adjustments and inflating the vestibular sac in his blowhole, the researchers found. In other words, it wasn't easy.

Sadly, after 30 years at the National Marine Mammal Foundation, NOC passed away five years ago. But the sound of his voice lives on.

Candidates seek foreign policy edge in 3rd debate

(AP) ? Still neck-and-neck after all these months, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney head into their third and final debate with each man eager to project an aura of personal strength and leadership while raising doubts about the steadiness and foreign policy credentials of the other guy.

Each is aiming for a commanding performance Monday to settle the seesaw dynamics of the first two debates: Romney gave Obama an old-fashioned shellacking in the first round, and the chastened president rebounded in their second encounter.

The 90-minute faceoff at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., offers the candidates their last opportunity to stand one-on-one before tens of millions of Americans and command their undivided attention before next month's election. Both candidates largely dropped out of sight and devoted their weekends to debate preparations, a sure sign of the high importance they attach to the event.

While the principals warm up for their evening debate in the battleground state of Florida, their running mates will be busy Monday seeking votes in two of the eight other states whose up-for-grabs electoral votes will determine the next president ? Vice President Joe Biden in Ohio and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan in Colorado. Also still hotly contested: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Virginia.

Deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Monday that "it really now comes down to that small segment of undecided voters."

Appearing on NBC's "Today" show, Cutter said, "The ground game is incredibly important at this point. We feel pretty good about where we are."

Hours before the debate was to begin, the Obama campaign announced it was running a new television ad in the debate state of Florida with a rare focus on foreign policy. Most other television spots have been on economic and other domestic issues. The ad talked about the costs of the past decade of war over an image of a soldier with a prosthetic leg. It pointed out that Obama ended the war in Iraq and said Romney would have kept forces in the country longer to help with the transition.

Campaign surrogates went on Sunday talk shows to frame the foreign policy matters that moderator Bob Schieffer will put before the candidates in a discussion sure to reflect "how dangerous the world is in which we live," as the CBS newsman put it. Iran's nuclear intentions, the bloody crackdown in Syria, security concerns in Afghanistan, China's growing power ? all that and more are on the agenda.

Biden told voters during a campaign stop in Canton, Ohio, that the debates are showing the profoundly different visions each ticket has for leading the country, including the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

"We will leave Afghanistan in 2014, period. They say it depends," Biden said. "Ladies and gentlemen, like everything with them, it depends. It depends on what day you find these guys."

On Iran, senior Romney campaign foreign policy adviser Dan Senor said on NBC Monday that Romney's approach is that "we've got to reach a diplomatic solution." He said the Obama administration's policy on Iran for the past four years has not discouraged Tehran from moving forward with its nuclear ambitions.

On Libya, Senor said "they didn't have the proper security" at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11.

The series of interviews Sunday and Monday fed into the broader debate over which candidate offers the steady hand and sound judgment for a nation facing myriad challenges at home and abroad.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, arguing for the Republicans, faulted Obama for "his failure to outline broad goals, real goals, a real view of what America's role in the world should be." Romney, by contrast, would "use America's role in the world as a catalyst for peace, prosperity and freedom," he said.

Ryan, campaigning in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Sunday, faulted the president for potential defense cuts and said that when adversaries "see us projecting weakness, when they see us hollowing out our military ... they think we are a superpower in decline." It was a likely preview of one of Romney's arguments in the debate.

Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod said that when the president took office "we were isolated in our position on Iran and in the world. And today, the world is unified against Iran with us, all because of the leadership of this president."

The Obama campaign released a blistering memo from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., accusing Romney of offering nothing but "endless bluster" on international issues.

"He is an extreme and expedient candidate who lacks the judgment and vision so vital for the Oval Office," said Kerry, who is considered a leading candidate to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state if Obama wins a second term.

When it comes to their foreign policy credentials, both candidates have reasons for optimism and concern: While foreign policy has been a strength of Obama throughout the campaign, some recent polls show his advantage narrowing. The Pew Research Center's October poll, for example, found that 47 percent of Americans favored Obama to make "wise decisions about foreign policy," while 43 percent preferred Romney.

American University professor Jordan Tama said the difficult trick for Romney in the debate will be to challenge Obama on foreign policy without looking like he's criticizing the commander in chief, which can be off-putting to voters. Obama, for his part, must make the case that his policies are sound and his leadership strong despite ongoing challenges around the world, including unrest in the Middle East and the chaotic situation in Libya.

While foreign policy has been overshadowed during this campaign by concerns about the domestic economy and jobs at home, everything matters in a race this tight. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Sunday showed each candidate favored by 47 percent of likely voters, reflecting a boost of support for Romney following his strong performance in the first debate in early October.

With early voting under way in many states, there is precious little time for the candidates to break loose. More than 4 million Americans already have voted.

When they come to your website to purchase, they will probably look around to see what other kinds of products you sell. They may even make another purchase while they are there picking up their cheap e-book.

You are going to need to build and maintain trust with your customers. When you are coming up with your marketing ideas, make sure all of the information that you plan on using can be supported with facts. Client testimonials, user reviews, and expert endorsements must be documented to remain effective.

When you are shipping your product, put a sample inside! You could also put a coupon in there, as well. People love coupons and are eager to get a good deal on any additional purchases at your website.

Insert rich and original content into your site. Your content should get high rankings with search engines in order for you to attract more customers.

Provide your frequent customers or visitors with a reward of some kind for making purchases from your site. Customer retention is a very valuable asset, and if you are generous to them, they will be more likely to return. They can also help to advertise your company in a positive light.

Make sure you know what tools your competitors are using to drive business. Whatever aspect of the market you?re poised to capitalize on, others will be working that angle too.

Figure out different ways that you can advertise your website. Some easy ways to share your site are to post on blogs, use social media, and put posters in businesses in your area. There are lots of different ways to get many people to visit your site. Just be as creative as you can.

Put relevant and useful information on your page. Simply providing a single-page site that provides your business hours and your address will not bring in customers. Post reviews of your products and write articles to keep your readers interested and establish your business as a reference.

Good content is the very source of a successful Internet marketing strategy. You need to review your content frequently to ensure you are putting out the message you want your customers to receive. In addition, make sure that someone looks over your content. A second set of eyes can give you valuable insight into the effectiveness of your message. Don?t forget to check your grammar and spelling to make sure that there aren?t any mistakes.

Let customers be able to write ratings on your products and enable them the option to explain why these ratings were chosen. When your customers leave honest feedback, it inspires confidence in others who are considering purchasing from you. It is good advertising for the quality of both your products and your customer service.

Be sure that you keep very detailed statistics. This should include refunds, sales, traffic, referrals and anything else you can think of. Statistics help you see what is working and what is not.

Find ways to allow customers to interact with each other on your website. Your website will be like a group instead of just a place where items can be purchased. It is natural for people to want to be part of a group, and if you give them that feeling, they are more likely to return to your site.

As you can see, Internet marketing does not have to suck up every spare free moment that you have. Be smart with time management, and soon you will have success.

Multilevel marketing can be a proven business structure to generate a very profitable business. However selecting the most appropriate opportunity can be a challenge. By reading Visalus reviews you?ll probably determine that that your particular search ends.

Libya says Gadhafi's former spokesman arrested

(AP) ? The office of the Libyan prime minister has announced that slain Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's former spokesman has been captured at a checkpoint outside the besieged town of Bani Walid.

The statement carried by the state news agency on Saturday says Moussa Ibrahim was captured by the forces of the interim Libyan government at a checkpoint in the town of Tarhouna.

The statement says Ibrahim is being taken to Tripoli to be questioned. It didn't specify when he was captured.

The urbane, English-speaking Ibrahim became the voice of the regime in its final year, often appearing on television defending it.

Libyan forces have surrounded Bani Walid, which they describe as a final bastion of sympathizers of Gadhafi's regime.

Belfast pizzeria forced to change name - UTV Live News

Cipriani restaurant has agreed to re-brand itself in a bid to resolve a High Court action over an alleged breach of trademark.

Proceedings were brought against the owners of the Lisburn Road eatery by the luxury Hotel Cipriani in Venice.

Lawyers for the hotel, a favourite destination of royalty, movie stars, politicians and celebrities, wanted a prohibition on the restaurant using the same name.

They had sought an injunction on the basis that it was flouting a Europe-wide trademark.

But Salvatore Liberante, the businessman behind the restaurant which opened in the summer, has instead given a series of undertakings.

It is really remarkable that somebody in Venice has got the power over us in Northern Ireland over a name.

Salvatore Liberante

Within four days the restaurant is to stop using the name, a judge was told.

A proposal to change two letters to make a new name of Sipriano has been put forward for consideration by the hotel. Other undertakings include the destruction of all menus, advertisements, internet pages and other materials bearing the plaintiff's trademark.

An online domain name for Cipriani pizzeria is also to be transferred over.

Barrister David Dunlop, appearing for the hotel, confirmed all these steps were to be completed within three weeks.

Adjourning the case until then, Mr Justice Horner stressed the need for the defendants to comply with the terms agreed.

He said: "If they are breached they are liable to be sent to jail or to be fined, so it is obviously important."

Outside the court Mr Liberante expressed his shock at the proceedings.

The Sicilian-born restaurateur, whose previous ventures in Belfast include Speranza and Antica Roma, claimed a rugby star had inspired the name for his new eating house.

"During the summer when I was looking for a name there was a lot of write-ups about Danny Cipriani, and I just liked the name," he said.

"When I looked on the internet there was nobody in Ireland or the UK using it.

"I had no idea that they had changed the law regarding copyright and European trademarks, I always thought it was first come, first served."

Mr Liberante accepted he has no choice other than to make the name change.

"The law is the law," he added. "I have agreed to change two letters, hopefully that will be the close of the dispute.

"I can't really see anybody in Venice being affected by the fact there is a Sipriano in Belfast."

Nokia to post loss ahead of make-or-break launches

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia is expected to report another quarterly loss and dwindling cash reserves on Thursday, underscoring the importance of next month's new smartphone launches as it battles to recoup ground lost to Apple and Samsung.

Once the world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia has fallen behind rivals as its partnership with software giant Microsoft has yet to capture consumers' imagination like Apple's iPhones or Samsumg's Galaxy models.

The Finnish group is now pinning its hopes on new, top-of-the-range Lumia 820 and 920 phones, which use Microsoft's latest Windows 8 software and are due to hit stores in early November.

Analysts say sales in the pre-holiday season may determine Nokia's chances of long-term survival.

"Competition is fierce," said Eric Beaudet at Natixis Securities. "The story really will be whether it can ramp up with the Windows 8 phones."

Analysts have written off the third quarter as a weak one for Nokia without new Lumia phones to compensate for a heavy drop in sales of older models.

They are forecasting an underlying loss - which strips out one-off items - of around 11 euro cents per share, according to the average forecast of 35 analysts. That would be the third straight quarter of underlying losses.

Many analysts said they would focus on how Chief Executive Stephen Elop plans to partner with network operators to make sure the newest Lumia phones can compete with Apple's new iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy SIII.

Details on aggressive sales and marketing plans could persuade investors to give Nokia more time, analysts said.

RUNNING OUT OF CASH, AND PATIENCE

On the other hand, a big fall in its cash could signal Nokia is running out of time. Its cash position is forecast to fall to 3.4 billion euros at the end of the third quarter from 4.2 billion three months earlier.

Nokia has been cutting spending and selling assets such as its Vertu luxury handset unit. It is also considering selling and leasing back its waterfront headquarters in Espoo, a short drive from Helsinki.

"We fear things are not going well," Societe Generale analyst Andy Perkins said in a research note. "Certainly the news that Nokia is looking to sell and then lease back its headquarters causes us to suspect that cash is becoming more and more of an issue."

Investors and analysts have said that if its cash position worsens and Lumia sales show little improvement over the coming months, the company may need to change its strategy - as well as its chief executive.

A few analysts recommend buying the shares, saying they look cheap at recent levels near 2.15 euros, with little premium over the value of assets such as intellectual property. The shares have fallen around 70 percent since the Microsoft tie-up in February 2011, hitting an 18-year low of 1.33 euros in July.

But others say it is pointless to ponder valuations when a company, particularly in the fast-moving consumer technology industry, is losing market share.

Commentary: A new life for coal sites - Midwest Energy News

A Ferris wheel at the former Zollverein coking plant in Germany. (Photo by Kari Lydersen / Midwest Energy News)

Coal plants have fallen out of public favor ? to put it lightly ? because of their significant contributions to climate change and public health problems.

But there is no denying their contributions to urban development and industrial history in the U.S. and Europe. The same goes for coal mines that provide fuel for the plants and coking operations that bake coal into the denser fuel needed for steel mills.

Whether they are still spewing pollution or standing derelict and overgrown by weeds, these coal-related structures are rich with stories: of man?s audacious struggles to build skyscrapers and light up cities, of brave and brawny workers often toiling under shocking conditions. Not to mention the mind-bending questions and concerns raised by a society so reliant on extracting and burning this fossil fuel from deep in the earth.

At least these are the impressions I often get when exploring operating and defunct coal mines, power plants and infrastructure in the U.S. and on a recent trip to Germany and the United Kingdom (as a climate media fellow for the Heinrich Boell Foundation North America).

As coal plants close across the U.S., including two plants in Chicago, planners, residents, environmentalists and amateur historians are debating what should be done with the sites. In Chicago there is much enthusiasm for preserving elements of the recently-closed Fisk and Crawford plants and also the State Line Power Station just across the border in Northwest Indiana, which closed in February. Currently it does not appear significant preservation of the buildings as museums or monuments is likely, perhaps because such conversions would require significant investment without promising returns.

But the conversion of coal and nuclear plants, coking works and coal mines into tourist attractions and cultural centers in Germany and England offers some inspiration for American cities.

The Tate Modern museum in London. (Photo by focalpunkt via Creative Commons)

In London, the Tate Modern art museum is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, fired by coal and then oil and known as a ?cathedral of power? until its closing in 1981. When the Tate Modern opened in 2000, it reportedly brought about 3,000 jobs and a new identity to an economically struggling neighborhood.

And the former Battersea coal-fired power plant also on the banks of the River Thames, made famous on the album cover for Pink Floyd?s ?Animals,? is slated for an ?8 billion upscale residential and commercial redevelopment by a Malaysian investment firm that bought it after a showdown with the Chelsea Football Club, which was also interested in purchasing the hulking structure. After the plant?s closure in 1975 a community group was convened to help decide its fate, including to make sure that locals benefited from any jobs created and weren?t overly harmed by increased traffic or other impacts of redevelopment.

Previous plans had called for turning Battersea into a hub for renewable energy generation or a theme park celebrating England?s industrial history.

At the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield amongst the coal field communities of Yorkshire, England, former miners lead tours of the sprawling underground Caphouse Colliery mine, which is now outfitted with life-size statues and real mining machinery, providing a window into mining techniques and working conditions through the ages.

Yorkshire has suffered severe economic decline since most of the coal mines and related operations closed in the 1980s and 1990s. But the mining museum provides some jobs, draws tourists from around England and abroad and offers extensive educational programs for local schools. Museum deputy director Willy McGranahan, a former miner himself, noted that it is an important way for school children to learn about the industry that shaped their region and their personal family histories, but has now largely faded away.

In the Ruhr region in Germany known for coal mining, coal-fired power plants and steel and other industries powered by coal, former coal sites have been turned into museums and cultural centers.

For example, the Zollverein mine and coking plant is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The former coal wash houses and other industrial buildings now house historical and modern art museums, small galleries and venues for corporate conferences, weddings and the like. The cooling towers, coking ovens and other infrastructure are preserved for visitors from around the world to wander. On a September afternoon as thunderheads and rainbow fragments created an otherworldly backdrop to Zollverein?s towering steel cylinders and conveyors, it was hosting a business conference related to renewable energy.

The cooling tower merry-go-round at Kalkar Wunderland. (Photo by Henk-Jan van der Klis via Creative Commons)

Meanwhile a nuclear plant in Kalkar, Germany, which was built but never actually operated, was transformed into a popular amusement park complete with a merry-go-round inside a cooling tower ? an idea also conceivable for old coal plants. Kalkar Wunderland reportedly attracts more than half a million visitors a year.

About a decade ago. Chicago?s Southeast Environmental Task Force and other local leaders tried to turn the skeleton of the Acme coking plant ? once part of Chicago?s proud steel industry ? into a museum. But despite valiant efforts to raise funds and support, the plan fizzled and the structure was demolished.

As U.S. cities continue to modernize and phase out archaic industry and power generation, relics like coking plants and old coal plants will become increasingly rare. As residents of Chicago?s Pilsen neighborhood who have railed angrily against the coal plant in their midst for years say, this could be a crucial time to enshrine memories of our energy past even as we look to a cleaner energy future.

From The Chairman?s Desk

Dear Friends,

Like so many of you, I have watched the first three debates of this year?s presidential election cycle with hopes that the American people would be presented with two clear choices for the direction of our nation and the leadership of our country. What we have seen, however, is only one choice, one direction forward and one leader that will return our nation to prosperity. With just twenty days to go, it is clear that Governor Mitt Romney is the leader that we need!

You see, despite President Obama?s campaign slogan of ?Forward,? his campaign has proven to be anything but forward-thinking. Last night, while Governor Romney clearly and concisely outlined his plans to move America forward over the next four years, President Obama failed yet-again to even discuss a second-term agenda. Preferring to resort to personal attacks, distortions and half-truths that even the most left-leaning of fact checkers couldn?t ignore, the President confirmed that the hope is gone and it is time for a change in leadership.

Letter from GAGOP Faith-Based Outreach Chairman Terri Green

Dear Fellow Republicans,

In less than a month, November 6th, 2012, we will be voting for our next President. My hope and prayer is that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will prevail. I can honestly say this is the most important election of our lifetime. Never before have so many issues been at the forefront as they are now in America today. It has been a battle of principles, issues, ideas and solutions. I have seen Baptists and Protestants standing with the Catholic Church because of the mandates in the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. We have witnessed the largest over reach of the federal government into the religious liberties of our brothers and sisters who are members of the Catholic Church.

Time and again President Obama has signaled a lack of concern, or even somewhat hostility, towards the Nation of Israel. His lackluster support and dismal outward concern for Israel?s security, is troublesome and could be one of the key driving forces in the political consequences of his defeat in November. In [Psalm 121:2-4] it says; My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip-indeed, he who watches over Israel will never slumber or sleep.

In the Headlines: Price seeks to tackle ?fiscal cliff? in 6th term

One of the major issues that will face U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-Roswell) if he is elected to a sixth term will have to be dealt with almost as soon as he goes back to Washington.

Price?s spokesman said this week that the 6th District Congressman would be too busy for an interview with the Journal, but in emailed responses, Price acknowledged that the looming ?fiscal cliff? would do tremendous harm to the United States economy and military. ?It would make irresponsible and indiscriminate cuts to our nation?s defense capabilities at a time when we face enormous challenges abroad,? Price, 58, wrote. ?It would weaken our economy by raising taxes and taking more money out of the pockets of struggling families and small businesses.?

Help Lead the Charge Today!

The Georgia Republican Party is fully committed to electing a Republican President in 2012. However, Victory won?t be achieved simply because we won the last elections. Victory can only be achieved by working hard each and every day to win the next elections. President Obama and the Democrats are targeting Georgia and could spend as much as $30 million to win our state. There?s too much at stake to leave this election to chance.?Please consider contributing $15, $25, $50 or any amount to help Georgia do its part to send Barack Obama back to Chicago!
